Korean Cystic Acne Treatment: When? Cost, Reviews, Methods

Are your cysts still flaring, and you're wondering whether Korean cystic acne treatment can fit into one trip to Seoul?
Here is what the rest of the post covers before you book the flight or the appointment.
By the end you'll know which methods suit the cysts and which suit the marks they leave, what review threads get right, what decides the cost, and how many days recovery takes. Knowing those four things is enough to plan a trip that fits your skin and your budget.
Hello, I'm Dr. Kim Jong Seon, Director of Gangnam HERA Plastic Surgery Clinic and a board member of the International Petit Medical Society.
At HERA, the specialist who consults with you is the one who treats you. An English interpreter joins your consultation and treatment, you pay the same price Korean patients pay, and you get a written estimate before anything starts.
I'm writing this because many people fly in hoping one session will clear deep cysts, and that plan tends to disappoint.
Active cystic acne usually needs months of prescription treatment from a dermatologist you can see regularly. Korean cystic acne treatment in Seoul fits best once the cysts are calm, so we can work on the redness, pores and scars they leave behind.
If you can't tell whether yours are calm yet, send one daylight photo of your cheeks and jaw on WhatsApp and ask "active or settled?" A photo shows what a description can't: raised, tender lumps versus flat red or brown marks.

Can a trip to Seoul treat active cystic acne?
Mostly, no. A cyst is a deep, inflamed lump under the skin, and it usually has no head to drain. The American Academy of Dermatology describes this kind of acne as something that typically needs a dermatologist's care. That care often means oral medicine such as isotretinoin, antibiotics, or hormonal therapy for some women. For a single large, painful cyst, a dermatologist may inject a corticosteroid to bring it down faster.
These treatments run for weeks to months, and several of them need follow-up visits and sometimes blood tests. That's why the doctor who prescribes them should be someone you can see again next month, in your own city. You can read more on what a Seoul clinic can and cannot do for acne.
So when people search for Korean cystic acne treatment, the part a short trip can realistically cover is what comes after: the marks and texture changes left once the cysts stop forming.
A Seoul trip suits you if:
- your breakouts have been controlled for a few months, with no new deep cysts
- what bothers you now is red or brown marks, enlarged pores or shallow scars
- you can plan follow-up sessions or accept that one trip may be one step of several
It's worth waiting if new cysts still appear every week, if you're taking isotretinoin or recently finished it (ask your prescriber how long to wait before needling), or if you're pregnant or breastfeeding.
Methods for the marks cystic acne leaves
The treatment on my menu for this stage is Potenza Exosome. It pairs Jeisys' Potenza RF microneedling with an ASCE+ exosome skin booster, aimed at pores, scars and redness. Fine needles carry radiofrequency heat into the dermis, and the skin responds by remodeling collagen over the following weeks. The AAD notes that microneedling can help acne scars, usually over a series of sessions.
About the exosome part: the US Food and Drug Administration has warned that no exosome products are approved there to treat disease. I treat the booster as a support for the microneedling, never as a cure for acne.
Brown marks are a separate issue. They're usually postinflammatory hyperpigmentation, which DermNet describes as fading over months and more common in darker skin. Sun protection matters more for these than any device, and heat-based treatment needs care on skin prone to it. There's more in our hyperpigmentation guide.
For scars that are mainly a texture problem, Juvelook, a collagen-stimulating booster, is also on my menu. The scar type and your skin decide which one I'd recommend, and sometimes the answer is to start with neither. Our acne scar treatment guide covers scar types in detail.
What do review threads get right about Korean acne care?
Three claims come up again and again in forum threads and video comments.
"Korean skincare cleared my cystic acne." Partly true. A gentle routine helps, and the AAD's advice is to wash twice a day with a mild, non-abrasive cleanser and never scrub. That's the honest answer to "best Korean face wash for acne": the gentle one your skin tolerates. But no cleanser reaches a cyst that sits deep in the skin.
"Korean spot treatments fix it." Hydrocolloid patches can cover a surface pimple and stop you picking at it. A deep cyst has nothing on the surface for a patch to draw out.
"One session erased my scars." This is the claim to read most skeptically. Collagen remodels over weeks, and scar treatment usually runs as a series. Change after a single session is possible, but it's rarely the whole result.
What decides the cost of your treatment?
There's no single figure for this, because the plan changes with your skin. These are the factors that move it:
- Stage of your acne. Settled skin with marks is a different plan from skin that still flares.
- Area. Cheeks only, or cheeks, temples and jaw.
- Sessions. One session this trip, or a series spread over more than one visit.
- The booster. Whether the exosome booster or another booster is added.
- Days in Seoul. A longer stay leaves room to treat early and still settle before you fly.
Your consultation with the treating specialist and the English interpreter are part of the visit, and you get a written estimate before treatment. The price is the same as for Korean patients. For context on scar work specifically, see what shapes an acne scar estimate in Seoul.
To get the figure for your own case, ask on WhatsApp what it would cost, with one photo of the area and the number of days you'll be in Seoul.
Who treats you, and what gets opened in front of you
The specialist who consults with you is the one who performs your treatment, without handing you off. We use only genuine, approved products, and the sealed vial is opened in front of you. We don't rush through high volumes, and the plan includes only what your skin needs.
For skin boosters, the plan starts from a scan of 40+ skin indicators, so you can compare the same numbers at your next visit. If you come back for a second session months later, that comparison is more useful than memory or photos taken under different light.
How many days does recovery take, and when can you fly?
In short, this is the part that sets your trip length. After RF microneedling, the skin usually goes through these stages:
| When | What you may notice | What to plan |
|---|---|---|
| Same day | Redness, warmth, mild swelling | A quiet evening, no sauna or alcohol |
| Days 1–3 | Redness fading, pinpoint marks, dryness | Gentle cleanser, moisturizer, sunscreen |
| Day 7 | Skin mostly settled, slight roughness possible | Normal routine; collagen change continues for weeks |
Many people wear light makeup from the next day, but ask on the day of treatment what fits your skin.
Avoid treatment the day before your flight.
Cabin air dries skin out and swelling can linger. Book it early in your stay so you have at least a few days in Seoul afterward.
Say you land on a Thursday evening with five days in Seoul and a Tuesday flight home. Your cysts have been quiet for four months, and you have shallow rolling scars and red marks on both cheeks. Friday works well for consultation and treatment, because the clinic is open until 8 pm on Fridays. Saturday is still a clinic day, Sunday is closed, and by Tuesday you'd usually be past the redness. If a fresh cyst appeared on your cheek that week, I'd treat around it or move the session, because needling through active inflammation is the trade I won't make.
Risks and side effects to know
The common reactions are temporary: redness and swelling for a day or a few days, pinpoint bleeding or marks, and dryness or flaking within the first week. Less often, a short breakout flare, darker patches from postinflammatory hyperpigmentation (more likely on darker skin), infection, or a cold sore flare in people prone to them can follow. How quickly you settle and how much change you see vary from person to person.
As general medicine, you should wait or skip this if you have active cysts or infection in the area, are taking or recently finished isotretinoin, had a laser or peel on the same area recently, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or tend to form keloid scars. Whether your skin is suitable is decided at the in-person exam.
Once home, keep using sunscreen and a mild cleanser and don't pick at any roughness. If redness spreads, pain increases, pus appears or you get a fever, see a doctor near you promptly and bring your treatment record. The US CDC's medical tourism advice also suggests planning that follow-up with a local doctor before you travel.
When you message, include your landing and departure dates plus a side-lit photo of the scarred area, which shows depth better than flat light, and ask which day of your trip would suit treatment.

Visiting HERA in Gangnam
We're on the 4th floor of 9 Seocho-daero 73-gil, Seocho-gu, Seoul, about three minutes from Gangnam Station. Hours are 10:00 to 20:00 on Mondays and Fridays, 10:00 to 19:00 Tuesday to Thursday and 10:00 to 17:00 on Saturdays, with lunch from 13:00 to 14:00. We're closed on Sundays and public holidays. HERA is registered with Korea's Ministry of Health and Welfare as a foreign patient attraction medical institution.
Send one photo on WhatsApp with the question you most want answered, whether that's "is my skin ready?" or "how many days should I plan?" One photo is enough, and you can ask before booking anything. When you come, I'll examine your skin in person and recommend the treatment that fits it.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Q1Does a Korean face wash help cystic acne?
A gentle cleanser helps your skin barrier and keeps irritation down, and dermatologists advise washing twice a day without scrubbing. It can't reach a deep cyst, so treat it as support for medical treatment rather than the treatment itself.Q2Do Korean acne spot treatments or patches work on cysts?
Hydrocolloid patches can protect a surface pimple and stop picking. Deep cysts usually have no head to drain, so patches do little for them. A dermatologist who can follow you over time is the right person for active cysts.Q3Can I have Potenza Exosome while I'm on isotretinoin?
Many doctors advise waiting for a period after isotretinoin before microneedling or other procedures. Ask the doctor who prescribed it how long they recommend, and mention it when you message us and at your consultation.Q4How many sessions do acne scars usually need?
Scar treatment usually runs as a series spaced several weeks apart, because collagen remodels slowly. The number for you is set after your skin is examined, and one trip can be the first step of a plan.Q5Do foreign patients pay a different price at HERA?
No. Foreign patients pay the same price as Korean patients, and you get a written estimate before treatment starts. To get the figure for your case, send a photo of the area and your trip dates on WhatsApp.
