Korean Hormonal Acne Treatment: Cure? Cost, Reviews, Methods

Is there a Korean hormonal acne treatment that finally stops the breakouts along your jaw and chin, or will a trip to Seoul leave you with the same spots and a fresh set of marks?
Read this before you book a skin appointment around your trip.
You'll know what decides the cost of acne-mark work in Seoul, what reviews get right and wrong, and which methods treat the acne itself versus what it leaves behind. That way you can put your days and budget into the part a visit can change.
Hello, I'm Dr. Kim Jong Seon, Director of Gangnam HERA Plastic Surgery Clinic.
At HERA, the specialist who consults with you is the one who treats you. International patients pay the same price as Korean patients, you get a written estimate before any treatment, and consultations run with an English interpreter.
I'm writing this because many adults arrive believing a Korean routine or a single procedure can switch hormonal acne off, and they spend the trip on the wrong problem.
No Korean hormonal acne treatment changes the hormones behind these breakouts. Hormonal acne is controlled with medical treatment over months, usually from your own doctor at home; what a few days in Seoul can do is work on the redness, enlarged pores and shallow scars once new breakouts have settled.
If you can't tell what your marks are, send one daylight photo of your jawline and chin on WhatsApp and ask the one thing you most want to know: are these marks pigment, or are they scars?

Why won't hormonal acne clear with skincare alone?
Hormonal acne in adults tends to cluster on the lower face: the jawline, the chin and around the mouth. It often flares in the days before a period, and many women see it start or return in their 30s, 40s or around menopause. The deep, tender bumps form inside the oil gland, well under the surface.
That is the part a routine can't reach. Androgens, the hormones that push oil production, signal the glands from inside the body. A cleanser, toner or serum works on the surface. It can keep skin calmer and less irritated, which matters, but it can't lower that signal.
The American Academy of Dermatology lists hormonal therapy, such as certain birth control pills or spironolactone, as options for women with this pattern of acne, and notes these medicines take time to show their effect. Those are prescription decisions, made and monitored by a doctor who sees you over months. That is why I tell people a single trip is the wrong tool for the active acne itself.
Which methods treat hormonal acne, and which treat what it leaves?
In short, it helps to split the problem in two. One half is the breakouts still forming. The other half is what earlier breakouts left: flat red or brown marks, enlarged pores, and dents in the skin.
| Method | What it targets | Where it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Prescription care (topical retinoids, hormonal therapy, other medicines) | New breakouts | With your doctor at home, ongoing |
| Daily care: mild cleanser, non-comedogenic moisturizer, sunscreen | Irritation, darkening of marks | Every day, anywhere |
| Potenza Exosome (RF microneedling with an exosome booster) | Shallow scars, pores, lingering redness | Once breakouts are under control |
| Skin boosters such as Rejuran or Juvelook | Texture, elasticity, pores | Alongside or after scar work, if needed |
Rejuran is a polynucleotide booster made from purified salmon DNA for elasticity, hydration and texture. Juvelook is a PDLLA booster that stimulates your own collagen for texture and pores.
Brown flat marks are a separate story. They are usually post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, pigment left behind by inflammation, and DermNet notes it tends to fade slowly once the inflammation stops, faster with steady sun protection. Our hyperpigmentation guide covers that side in more detail.
Microneedling over active, inflamed acne is generally avoided, because the needles can spread inflammation and leave new marks. So the order matters: control first, then repair. For the wider view of acne care in a Seoul clinic, see what a Seoul clinic can and cannot do for acne.
Is a Seoul skin visit right for you now, or should you wait?
Scar and texture work on this trip fits you if new breakouts have been quiet for a while on your current treatment, your marks are mostly flat or shallow, and you have several days in Seoul between the session and your flight.
Waiting makes more sense if you still get new deep spots every week, you're on isotretinoin or recently finished it, you're pregnant or breastfeeding, or the skin is infected. In that case the next step is a dermatologist at home about prescription or hormonal options, with scar work planned for a later trip.
Say you're 46, living in Toronto, and for three years you've had breakouts along your jaw before each period. Your family doctor started a prescription last spring, and new spots have mostly stopped. What's left is a scattering of flat brown marks and a few shallow, rolling dents on your cheeks, and you have six days in Seoul in March. I'd reason it this way: the brown marks are pigment, so sunscreen and time do most of that work.
RF microneedling may help with the dents, and one session early in the trip would start on them without touching the prescription that keeps your acne quiet. If you were still getting two or three new cysts a week, I'd tell you to keep this trip for skin care shopping and leave the needles for later.
What do Korean acne reviews get right and wrong?
Forum threads about Korean hormonal acne treatment tend to repeat three claims.
The first is that a Korean skincare routine cleared someone's hormonal acne. That's partly true. Mild cleansers, fewer layers and daily sunscreen help acne-prone skin, and the AAD's skin care tips point the same way: wash twice a day and after sweating, don't scrub, and don't pick. For hormonal flares, though, a routine alone often isn't enough, and many people who post clear skin were also on a prescription.
The second is that Korean spot treatments and pimple patches heal cysts overnight. A patch covers a spot and stops you from picking at it, which can mean fewer marks. It doesn't reach a deep nodule under the skin.
The third is that one laser session in Seoul erased someone's scars. Scar treatment usually works over a series of sessions, with gradual change. One session is a start.
As for the many searches for a Korean face wash for acne: I wouldn't single out one product. Look for a mild, low-foam formula labeled non-comedogenic, and if your skin feels tight after rinsing, it's too strong for you.
What decides the cost, and what's included?
In short, these items move the cost of acne-mark treatment in Seoul:
- Area: cheeks only, or the full face including the jawline and temples.
- Number of sessions: scars usually need a series spaced weeks apart, which may mean more than one trip.
- Combinations: Potenza Exosome alone, or together with a booster such as Rejuran.
- Numbing: the option is confirmed at your consultation.
- Days in Korea: how much time you need between the session and your flight.
International patients pay the same price as Korean patients, and you receive a written estimate before treatment. Our acne scar cost guide for Seoul goes through these items further. To get the figure for your own case, ask on WhatsApp what it would cost, with a photo of the areas you want treated.
The same doctor from consultation to treatment, and a sealed vial
The doctor who consults with you is the doctor who treats you; your session isn't handed off. When it's time to begin, the vial is still sealed on the tray, and I open it in front of you, so you see the seal break before anything goes onto your skin.

Recovery after Potenza Exosome, and your flight home
Same day: redness and warmth similar to a mild sunburn, sometimes with tiny pinpoint marks.
Day 3: for many people the redness has mostly faded; the skin may feel dry or flake a little.
Day 7: most people look like themselves again, and this is the point I like you to reach before a long-haul flight.
Before you fly
Don't schedule the session for the day before your flight. Cabin air is dry and freshly treated skin needs a few days of sunscreen and plain moisturizer, so book it early in your trip.
Risks and side effects to know
Common temporary reactions are redness, swelling, pinpoint bleeding marks, dryness and flaking, which usually settle within days. Less often, a small breakout flare or darkening of the treated skin appears; DermNet notes that post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation is more likely in darker skin types. Infection and scarring are rare.
As general medicine, it's wiser to wait if you have:
- active inflamed acne or an infection in the area
- current or recent isotretinoin use
- pregnancy or breastfeeding
- a recent peel or laser on the same area
- a tendency to keloid scars, or cold sores that flare easily
If pain, swelling or redness gets worse after day 3 instead of better, or you notice pus or a fever after flying home, see a doctor where you live that day and bring the name of the treatment you had. The CDC's medical travel advice is to arrange follow-up care at home before you go and to carry a copy of your records. Recovery differs from person to person, and the final plan is set at your face-to-face consultation.
If the recovery days are your main worry, send your flight date and a side-view photo of your cheeks in daylight on WhatsApp, and ask which day of your trip leaves enough room before you fly.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Q1Can Potenza Exosome stop new hormonal breakouts?
It isn't designed to. Potenza Exosome targets scars, pores and redness in the dermis. New hormonal breakouts need medical control, such as topical retinoids or hormonal therapy from your own doctor.Q2Should I stop my acne prescription before coming to Seoul?
Don't stop a prescription without talking to the doctor who prescribed it. Bring a list of what you use, including creams. Retinoid creams are often paused for a few days around microneedling, so ask your prescriber about that timing.Q3How long after isotretinoin should I wait before microneedling?
Guidance on this has changed over the years, and many doctors still prefer to wait several months after the course ends. Ask the doctor who prescribed it, and mention the date you stopped when you get in touch.Q4Will brown acne marks fade without treatment?
Flat brown marks are usually post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. They tend to fade slowly once new breakouts stop, and daily sunscreen helps. Dents in the skin are scars and don't fade the same way.Q5Is Korean skincare for acne different from what I can buy at home?
The principles are the same: a mild cleanser, a non-comedogenic moisturizer and daily sunscreen. Korean products are often lighter in texture, which some people prefer, but none of them change the hormones behind hormonal acne.
