Fat Dissolving Injections Korea Side Effects: What Is Normal

On this page
I'm Dr. Jong Seon Kim, a plastic surgeon at Gangnam HERA in Seoul and a board member of the International Petit Medical Society, and most of my clinical day is spent on fillers and injectables. The messages I receive about fat dissolving injections side effects come in two kinds β before treatment and after it β and they ask the same thing: "What can go wrong with fat dissolving injections, and is what I'm feeling normal?" The short answer: the usual side effects are mild swelling, redness, tenderness and small bruises at the injection sites, and they typically settle within a few days. Less commonly, complications such as bleeding, infection or inflammation can occur, and those need a doctor to look at them. Below is why these reactions happen, how to tell normal from not normal, what we do to keep the risk low, and what to do if something has already happened.
What are the side effects of fat dissolving injections?
Mild swelling, redness, tenderness and small bruises at the injection sites, which usually settle within a few days. These are expected reactions to the treatment, not signs that it has gone wrong. Most patients return to daily life straight away, and the session itself takes only about 10 to 15 minutes.
- Swelling β the treated area can look fuller for a few days, which is why it may seem bigger, not smaller, right after treatment.
- Redness β a flush around the injection points that fades as the swelling goes down.
- Tenderness β the area can feel sore to touch, more often on the body than on the face.
- Small bruises β at some injection points, depending on the area and your skin.
Less commonly, complications such as bleeding, infection or inflammation can occur, and satisfaction with the result also varies between individuals. Results vary from person to person, and so does the way each person's tissue reacts.

Why do these side effects happen?
Because the treatment works by breaking down fat cells, and the body then has to clear them β the swelling is part of that process. A lipolytic solution is injected into a localized pocket of fat, where it expands and begins breaking down fat cells. Over the following weeks, the body metabolizes and eliminates the dissolved fat. That is a biological process happening inside the treated zone, so a few days of swelling and tenderness are what you would expect.
The rest comes from the injections themselves. Each needle point is a tiny wound, so redness and the occasional bruise are normal, in the same way they are after any injection. This is also why side effects are usually more noticeable on larger body zones, where more injection points are needed, than in a small facial pocket.
What is normal, and when should you contact us?
Normal reactions are mild and get better day by day; a reaction that gets worse after the first few days, or comes with fever, is the one to report. The direction of change matters more than how it looks on the first day.
| Usually normal | Contact us promptly |
|---|---|
| Mild swelling that is improving over a few days | Swelling or pain that increases after the first few days instead of easing |
| Redness around the injection points that fades | Redness that spreads, feels hot, or comes with fever or feeling unwell |
| Tenderness when you press the area | Discharge from an injection point, or an area that becomes firmer and more painful |
| Small bruises that change colour and fade | Bleeding that does not stop with gentle pressure, or a bruise that keeps growing |
Infection and inflammation are uncommon, but they are exactly the things that respond best when they are seen early. If you are unsure, send us a photo on WhatsApp β I would always rather look at something that turns out to be normal than hear about it a week late.
Are side effects different on the face and the body?
The reactions are the same kind, but they show and feel differently. At HERA the face is treated with Sok-Sok Face Injection and the body with Sok-Sok Body Injection.
Face
On the face β double chin, jawline, cheek fat, around the cheekbones, beside the nose or the eye area β swelling is more visible than it is uncomfortable. Under the chin, it can make the jaw-to-neck line look fuller for a few days. Small bruises are easier to notice here, which matters if you have photos or meetings planned.
Body
On the body β abdomen, flanks and love handles, upper arms, thighs, back, accessory breast, inner knees and calves β swelling is easier to hide under clothes, but tenderness is more common, especially where a waistband or bra strap presses. Larger zones mean more injection points, so there can be more small bruises across the area.

How do we keep the risk low?
By deciding carefully whether, where and how much to inject β and by giving you clear aftercare before you leave. Most of what makes this treatment safe happens before the needle.
- Assessment first β a doctor checks that the fullness is really fat. Injecting a muscle or loose skin problem adds side effects without adding results; a wide jaw from the masseter is a job for Botox for the jawline, and calf bulk is often muscle too, as our calf Botox guide explains.
- Zone-by-zone design β dosing and injection points are mapped per patient and per zone, then marked, so no area receives more than it needs.
- Topical numbing and a fine needle β for comfort and to keep each injection point small.
- A doctor injects β placement and dose are clinical decisions.
- Tell us your history β any medication, any condition, or pregnancy and breastfeeding should be discussed before treatment, not after.
What you can do afterwards
- Use cold compresses for swelling.
- Stay hydrated, and keep moving gently after body treatment.
- Avoid intense heat and alcohol for a couple of days.
- Keep the injection points clean and avoid pressing or rubbing them.
How a clinic handles assessment and aftercare is a large part of choosing one; I set that out in how to choose a clinic for fat dissolving injections in Korea. A lower quote is not automatically riskier, but you should know what it includes β our fat dissolving injections price guide explains how to compare like with like.
What should you do if a side effect has already happened?
Watch the direction of change, use the simple aftercare above, and send us a photo if anything is getting worse rather than better. Most swelling and bruising only needs time.
- Swelling or bruising that is slowly improving β continue cold compresses, avoid heat and alcohol, and give it a few days.
- Anything in the "contact us" column above β message us with a photo and tell us when you were treated. Do not wait for it to pass on its own, and do not squeeze or massage the area.
- A result you are unhappy with β wait until the result has had time to develop, about 2β4 weeks for the face and 3β6 weeks for the body, before judging it. Early on you are mostly seeing swelling. If a zone looks uneven after that, we review it together before deciding on anything further.
If you were treated elsewhere, the same signs apply, and you are welcome to send us photos. Contacting the clinic that treated you first is usually best, because they know what was injected and where.
What patients ask me next
"Can I fly home soon after treatment?"
Most people return to daily life immediately, but mild swelling and small bruises can last a few days, so I suggest leaving a little time in Seoul if you can. Because the result itself develops over weeks, you will usually see most of the change at home β we stay reachable on WhatsApp after you leave.
"Does swelling mean the treatment is working?"
Not exactly. Swelling is a reaction to the treatment, not the result. How the real change appears over the following weeks is explained in our fat dissolving before and after guide.
"Is fat dissolving right for me at all?"
It suits small, localized pockets of fat, not weight loss or loose skin. Our fat dissolving injections guide explains who it suits. If you have read about side effects of other injectables, our masseter Botox gone wrong guide covers a different treatment with different risks.

The honest limits
No injection is free of risk, and fat dissolving is no exception. Mild swelling, redness, tenderness and small bruises are common for a few days. Complications such as bleeding, infection or inflammation are uncommon but possible, and satisfaction with the result varies between individuals. Careful assessment, zone-by-zone design and good aftercare lower the risk; they do not remove it. What I can promise is to explain all of this before you decide, to tell you if injections are the wrong tool for your concern, and to answer quickly if something does not look right afterwards.
Book a consultation
If you are weighing up fat dissolving injections, or you are worried about a reaction after treatment, send a photo of the area from the front and the side and tell us when it was treated. We will arrange a consultation in Gangnam, or a photo consultation first if you are still abroad. An English interpreter joins every visit, and you receive an itemised written estimate before anything begins β international and local patients pay exactly the same.
