Hyperhidrosis Treatment in South Korea: What a Clinic Can Do

I'm Dr. Jong Seon Kim, a plastic surgeon at Gangnam HERA in Seoul and a board member of the International Petit Medical Society, and most of my clinical day is spent on fillers and injectables. Not every injectable question is about appearance. Some of the most grateful patients I see come with a message like this: "I sweat through my shirts every day, even in winter. What can a clinic in Korea actually do about it?" The direct answer: for heavy underarm sweating, the treatment I offer is botulinum toxin, injected across the sweating area of the underarm. It reduces sweating for a number of months, takes minutes, and is repeated when it wears off. It does not cure the condition, and underarms are the sweating area on our treatment list β so I will also tell you what it cannot do and when you should see a different doctor first.
What hyperhidrosis treatment does HERA offer?
Botulinum toxin for underarm sweating β the same type A toxins we use for wrinkles and jaw slimming, placed for a different purpose. All four products we use β Allergan Botox, Xeomin, Coretox and Newlux β list underarm sweating as a treatment area.
In the face, toxin relaxes a muscle. In the underarm, it temporarily quiets the nerve signals that switch the sweat glands on, so the treated area produces less sweat. The glands are not removed and nothing is cut; when the effect fades, sweating gradually returns and the treatment can be repeated. Is your sweating the kind this treatment is for?
It is meant for heavy sweating in the underarms that disrupts ordinary life β not for normal sweating in heat or exercise. The patients who benefit most describe the same things: shirts that stain within hours, changing clothes during the working day, avoiding certain colours, and antiperspirants that no longer help.
When I would ask you to see a physician first
- Sweating that started suddenly, especially later in life
- Sweating all over the body rather than in one area
- Heavy sweating at night, or together with fever, weight loss or a racing heart
- Sweating that began with a new medication
Those patterns can have an underlying cause, and toxin would only hide the symptom. I would rather you have that checked by your own doctor, then come back to us if the answer is local sweating that needs managing.
What about sweaty hands, feet or face?
Those areas are not on HERA's listed treatment areas, so I won't promise them here. Our toxin treatment list names underarm sweating specifically. If your main problem is somewhere else, tell us in your message before you travel β we will answer plainly whether it is something we treat, rather than let you discover it in the consultation room.
I would also be careful with any clinic that promises every sweating area in one short visit without examining you first. The underarm is the area I can plan and stand behind.
How is underarm hyperhidrosis treated, step by step?
A consultation, marking of the sweating area, fine-needle injections, cooling and aftercare advice β usually about 5~10 minutes of treatment.
- Consultation: your history, how the sweating affects you, and whether anything suggests a cause worth checking first.
- Cleansing and marking: the area that sweats is mapped and marked so the toxin is spread where it is needed.
- Injection: small amounts with a very fine needle across the marked area. Discomfort is usually mild; cooling or numbing can be used if you are sensitive.
- Cooling and aftercare: most people go straight back to their day.
For a few hours afterwards, avoid rubbing the area, lying down and heat β saunas, hot baths and hard exercise. Tiny needle marks or slight redness can appear briefly.
When will you sweat less, and how long does it last?
Most people notice the change within 3~7 days, with the full effect at around two weeks, and the toxins we use generally last about 3~4 months. How long it holds in the underarm varies with the dose, the product and your own body. Results vary from person to person. I would rather you judge it over a full season than promise a date.
Because the effect fades, this is a treatment people repeat. Many time it before the hottest months or before an event, travel or a new job. How does it fit into a trip to Seoul?
Easily β it is short, has little downtime, and can be done early in your stay. Book it near the start of the trip, so you can mention anything unusual while you are still in Seoul, and avoid planning a sauna or a hot spring for the same evening.

What patients ask me next
"Is it safe to repeat for years?"
People do repeat it, and each session is planned with your history in mind. Tell me which product you had before and how long it lasted. It is not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or with neuromuscular disorders.
"Does it hurt?"
It is a series of small, quick injections. Most people describe mild discomfort; cooling or numbing helps if you are sensitive.
"Is it the same treatment as cosmetic botox?"

The honest limits
Toxin for hyperhidrosis manages sweating; it does not cure it, and the effect is temporary. It treats the area injected, not the whole body. Underarm sweating is the area on our list, and other sweating areas or other kinds of hyperhidrosis treatment may belong with a different specialist. What I can offer is an honest assessment, a quick and careful treatment for the underarms, and a written price before anything begins.
